“Who is she? And what is doing here?”

Moira shot Niall a look that said, “alright, huh?” as he was being interrogated by his advisors. They had all been waiting for the trio on the steps of the courtyard, not giving Niall the chance to dismount before they started in on him. Blaine had disappeared quickly, which Moira chose to believe that meant he did not think Niall needed the assistance. But from where she stood, things were starting to look a little hairy.

“Moira,” Niall corrected, emphasizing her name, “is the woman who saved me life after we were attacked. Were it nae for her healing skills, I would nae be here, and ye would be without a laird.”

They eyed her then. She felt a tad insecure under their scrutiny. She knew her faded yellow dress was seven years old and, thus, seven years out of style. The traveling had undoubtedly made a mess of her hair. She was sure she looked every bit of the crazed witch from the woods. But she had never let leering looks and unkind words affect her before, she certainly was not going to start now.

“If ye will excuse us, I am going to show the lady to her chambers. Ye can introduce yerselves at dinner tonight and hope ye are able to get back in her good graces. Seeing as she has agreed to serve the keep as healer, ye would nae want to have to make amends when ye need her,” he warned.

The group was silent then as they watched Niall stride back to her side. He bent to pick up her bags and gave her a wink before straightening, making a show of leading her inside.

As soon as they walked in the doors, Moira felt her jaw go slack, and she wasn’t sure she would ever remember how to close it again. Somehow, he had managed to take an imposing stone fortress and turn it into a home. The roaring fireplace gave the otherwise brisk air warmth and light. Greenery was wrapped around the beams in the ceiling, making one feel they were outside while sitting inside. Colorful, patterned rugs covered the stone floors with long, wooden tables sitting on top of them. Every wall hosted its share of doors and hallways, with a large staircase on one side and tall windows on the other. She felt it would take a lifetime to adjust to living in a place like this.

“What do ye think of me home?” Niall asked, cutting into her thoughts.

“‘Tis amazing, Niall. After spending me entire life in one room, this feels like, like a castle,” she told him, wonder in her words.

He chuckled, looking around the hall for a moment before turning back to her and saying, “it is a castle, love. Now let me show ye where ye will be staying.”

She followed him, lost by the third turn they made. After last night, she was not sure if he expected her to stay in his chambers and
